Lightning Symbol and Snake Dance
Produktbeschreibung
The legacy of the art and cultural scientist Aby Warburg is always subject to reassessment. The material remains that he collected on a trip through the southwest of the USA in 1895/96 and donated to the Museum für Völkerkunde in Hamburg (now the Museum am Rothenbaum) are almost unknown. The results of this trip only unfolded much later in Warburg s famous lecture on the Hopi snake ritual (1923). Following Warburg s transdisciplinary approach, the publication examines his guiding principles in putting together his collection as well as his reading of Pueblo art and culture. The fascination of the snake ritual among contemporaries is illuminated as well as the history of the reception of the text. On the other hand, there are the views and strategies of those responsible for Hopi, which have so far been neglected, to regain the ritual secret knowledge and the cultural sovereignty of interpretation.
ABY WARBURG (1866 1929) is considered the founder of modern visual science. His main subject was the investigation of the afterlife of antiquity in the Renaissance, which he recorded in his iconic Bilderatlas Mnemosyne.
