Focussing on competences as an outcome of educational processes has lead to an increasing amount of (inter)national research findings in this context. Using a systematic literature review, this study identifies methods of competence assessment of young trainees in VET in Europe. This analysis is based on 36 studies. Results demonstrate i. a. that research often originates from the Netherlands, Turkey and Switzerland. They mostly address occupation-specific competencies,followed by transferable and general competencies. Paper-based multiple-choice tests, self-assessment questionnaires and other-assessments dominate. Information regarding quality criteria is often insufficient for an evaluation.
